Featured Artist: Leisure Addicts

Leisure Addicts is the nom de lounge of San Francisco-based multimedia artist Keith R. Crosley. A high-tech marketer by day, semi-professional synth programmer/sound designer and avocational filmmaker, Crosley says:

“Leisure Addicts is my latest creative outlet, a musical response to the pressures of the high-stress, go-go Silicon Valley tech startup lifestyle. I’m very inspired by mid-century ‘lounge’ artists like Esquivel, Martin Denny, Les Baxter — or even the ‘Word Jazz’ of Ken Nordine — whose music evokes these imaginary, exotic audio locales that create a space for fantasy and escape in a complex and threatening world. It’s the same sort of social function that today’s chillout genre serves – music for relaxing, drinking, socializing, getting your low-key groove on…

The style explored in Leisure Addicts is an outgrowth of some music cues I recorded for my film Moose as part of the 2008 48 Hour Film Project. Composed in about 40 minutes after nearly 48 hours without sleep, they expressed a tone that I wanted to develop further, but at a more leisurely pace.

With Leisure Addicts, I’m focusing on using very contemporary electronic music production techniques to fuse a modern chillout vibe with vintage flavor, using gentle distortions, filtered delays, software emulations of vintage audio hardware and bits of vinyl noise to create an imaginary, retro-futuristic sound world without being obviously ‘lo-fi’.”

Look for an album-length collection, Experiments in Leisure, in the latter half of 2009. In the meantime, individual tracks and videos are being released online — at a suitably leisurely pace — at http://www.leisureaddicts.com. Oh, and follow us as @LeisureAddicts on Twitter, of course…

SHINE’s story begun in 2003, gathering in the backyard of a home studio 3 talents in fusion, Guillaume Simon, outstanding songwriter, Laurent Houdard, brilliant sound designer & Antoine Delecroix, magical engineer. These artists are the heart and soul of shine’s sparkling music.

SHINE’s determination to innovate, results in a brilliant electro-organic pop spiral, alive and personal. Their first productions doesn’t take long to catch attention .Two singles are regulary broadcasted on French and international airs, One day and Ashbury immediately meet an advised public.

These first two singles are immediately greeted by enthusiastic reviews.The EP One day where electronic arrangements appeared naturally published in June 2004 was sold out within a few months. Several compilations in various countries such as France, Germany, China and the United States have added to their track list a jewel ‘made in’ SHINE. Inspired song writing serves Hanane Laraki’s sensual Moroccan voice invited on their debut album. Shine blends references and harmoniously mixes styles (pop, soul, folk, trip-hop, world…) letting various influences merge, creating simple , yet sophisticated compositions, that resemble to no other.

Featured Artist: Under

The music of Under has been described as ‘pop noir’ - vague, often melancholic lyrics, agreeably catchy melodies, warm sounds with a hint of something darker hidden in Jen Triano’s distinctive, almost innocent vocal delivery. They comprise singer Jen Triano and keyboard player Eamonn Flynn. They hail from San Francisco although Eamonn is originally from Dublin, Ireland. Along the way they bring in other people to flesh out their sound. Their forthcoming debut full length release will feature contributions from many great musicians including Canadian electronic artist Milosh and former Kronos Quartet cellist Joan Jeanrenaud. Behind it all though is a meeting of minds between two people whose tastes seem to effortlessly overlap. They released their debut EP in late 2006, a remix of their song ‘Under” by Morgan Page was featured on CBS Friday night show ‘Moonlight’, and they are presently finishing up work on their debut album.
